Over recent years the water companies have been doing all they can to encourage people to install water meters and this could be why.
Thames Water send £10k bill without any explanation
A single mother of three who lives in Witney, Oxfordshire, believes there is a leaking pipe underneath her home, but Thames Water has told her they cannot come out to investigate and assess the issue until Thursday 16 January.
This is the big problem with water meters as whereas previously the customer paid a fixed fee for water, when a water meter is installed, you pay for every drop of water.
If you have a leak anywhere after the meter you, the customer, pay for every drop of water even if they are not aware of the leak.
Where is the advantage to the water company to even make you aware of a problem, let alone help you with the problem?
Every drop of water from a leak in your home is more money to the company, the longer the leak goes unreported or undetected the more money the customer pays and the more money the water company makes.
We strongly advise anyone with a water meter to keep a close eye on it, and on the slightest suspicion of an increase in water usage call in a specialist leak detector
